A Guide to Certified in Production and Inventory Management

APICS, USA launched Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) certification in the year 1973 and today it is the world’s leading one on the internal supply chain. Anyone who would like to launch their career in supply chain or to transition into supply chain, CPIM is the gateway to achieve their objective. Supply chain is in upswing across the world and there is a great demand for trained and certified supply chain professionals, thanks to increasing competition, customer expectations and the growth of ecommerce industry.

CPIM is an ideal certification for passing out graduates to launch their career in a firm manner in the supply chain industry. Unfortunately, we don’t have that many undergraduate programs that focus on supply chain education and CPIM becomes the only source to gain the kind of mastery that industry needs. CPIM will also give the confidence on the supply chain body of knowledge so that the young graduates can face the interview and perform well in their supply chain positions.

CPIM is a two-part examination called Part-1 and Part-2. One need to complete Part-1 and then focus on Part-2. For aspirants, I would recommend that you can complete Part-1 and join the work force and parallelly you can complete Part-2 to become a CPIM certified. Most of the companies recognise success in CPIM Part-1 itself for the supply chain positions. CPIM certification process contains 5 steps and is listed below.

1. APICS International Plus Membership 2. Get the CPIM Part-1 Learning System
3. Attend a 3-Day Classroom Training
4. Prepare for two months
5. Appear for the CPIM Part-1 Examination

Get the CPIM Part-1 Learning System

CPIM Part-1 Learning System is a must to achieve a success in the CPIM Part-1 Examination of APICS, USA. The CPIM Learning System contains two components. One is a text book and the other is a web tool. The text book contains the following 13 chapters that need to be mastered and also you need to practice the quizzes and flashcards in the online component. The text book is yours forever and the web tool will be available for one-year.

Attend a 3-Day Classroom Training

There are two-ways to prepare for the CPIM Part-1. One is self-study and the other is classroom training. If you an experienced supply chain professional (say for about 10 years), you can prepare CPIM Part-1 on your own using the CPIM Learning System. But for others, I would strongly recommend the Classroom training. Fhyzics conducts a three-day classroom trainings across the globe where you will be fully immersed in the thirteen chapters of CPIM Part-1 during a three full-day classroom discussion and gain a sound understanding in the supply chain concepts.

Prepare for two months

Once you finish the classroom or commence a self-study, prepare using the CPIM Learning System for at least two months. If someone going through a self-study mode add one more month as a safety factor. Each chapter must be reviewed at least three times and the same is applicable for the web tool as well. Once you have mastered the material, it is time to appear for the CPIM Part-1 Examination.

Appear for the CPIM Part-1 Examination

CPIM Part-1 Examination is an online, closed book, multiple choice format. You will be answering 150 questions over 3.5 hours. The scoring range is 200 to 350.
