How to Guess Unknown Words in English Tests

Facing unfamiliar words during English tests is a common challenge for ESL learners. Instead of panicking or skipping the question, students can apply smart guessing techniques to understand the meaning and choose the correct answer. At Fhyzics Academy, we guide students and professionals through such effective strategies as part of our ESL training programs.

One useful method is contextual guessing. Look at the sentence as a whole and try to understand the general idea. Words around the unknown word—especially adjectives, verbs, or connecting phrases—can provide vital clues. For instance, if you see, “The weather was so dreary that no one wanted to go outside,” the words “no one wanted to go outside” suggest that “dreary” means something unpleasant.

Another approach taught at Fhyzics Academy is identifying word parts, such as prefixes, suffixes, and roots. For example, if you come across the word autograph, recognizing “auto” (self) and “graph” (write) can help you guess that the word relates to a person’s own writing or signature.

Elimination strategies are also helpful in multiple-choice questions. If a few options seem totally unrelated to the context, cross them out to increase your chances of selecting the correct answer.

Students at Fhyzics Academy are encouraged to build a habit of reading regularly. The more words you see in context, the easier it becomes to make educated guesses. Reading articles, short stories, and even practice test materials improves your vocabulary and analytical thinking.

Guessing is not about wild assumptions—it’s a skill that can be improved with practice. At Fhyzics Academy, we offer practical exercises and expert guidance to help learners boost their test performance and confidence in using English effectively.
