Purpose:

A Business Case provides a justification for a course of action based on the benefits to be realized by using the proposed solution, as compared to the cost, effort, and other consideration to acquire and live with that solution.

Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK®)

The term Business Case captures the reasoning for initiating a project or task. The logic of the business case is that, whenever resources such as money, effort are consumed there should be in support of a specific business need. The business cases are presented in a well structured written document. The business cases with the better performance would improve the customer satisfaction, require less task processing time, and reduced system maintenance costs. It adequately captures both quantifiable and non-quantifiable characteristics of the proposed project. The business cases can range from comprehensive and highly structured Methodologies as required by the project management. Many information are included in the formal business cases which could be the background of the project. From these information, the justification of the project is derived.

The Business Case is presented in a formal document and it may also be presented in informal methods. A business case captures the rationale for under taking the change in the project. It may also be a catalyst for one or more initiatives in order to implement the change in the project development. The amount of time and resources spent on the business cases should be proportional to the size and importance of its potential value. The business cases provides sufficient detail to inform and request the approval by providing the method for the implementation of the project. The business cases are mainly used to define the needs for business, determine the desired outcomes of the project, and recommend a appropriate solution.
