Top Ten Facts on Business Analysis Techniques – Power/Interest Grid

Overview: The Power/Interest Grid, also known as the Stakeholder Prioritization Matrix, is a visual tool used to categorize stakeholders based on their level of power and interest in a project or organization.
Purpose: The purpose of the Power/Interest Grid is to help organizations identify and prioritize stakeholders based on their level of influence and concern, enabling effective stakeholder management and communication planning.

Visual Representation: The Power/Interest Grid is typically represented as a two-dimensional matrix with four quadrants: High Power/High Interest, High Power/Low Interest, Low Power/High Interest, and Low Power/Low Interest. Stakeholders are plotted in these quadrants based on their power and interest levels.

Power: Power in the Power/Interest Grid refers to the stakeholder's ability to influence the project or organization, which can come from their position, authority, resources, or expertise.

Interest: Interest in the Power/Interest Grid refers to the stakeholder's level of concern or involvement in the project or organization, which can come from their perceived impact, benefits, or risks.

High Power/High Interest: This quadrant represents stakeholders who have both high power and high interest in the project or organization. These stakeholders are considered critical and require active engagement and close communication to maintain their support and involvement.

High Power/Low Interest: This quadrant represents stakeholders who have high power but low interest in the project or organization. These stakeholders may need to be kept informed but may not require extensive engagement, as their interest level is low.

Low Power/High Interest: This quadrant represents stakeholders who have low power but high interest in the project or organization. These stakeholders may require regular communication and engagement to keep them informed and involved.

Low Power/Low Interest: This quadrant represents stakeholders who have both low power and low interest in the project or organization. These stakeholders may require minimal effort and can be kept informed at a high level.

Stakeholder Prioritization: The Power/Interest Grid helps organizations prioritize stakeholders by categorizing them into different quadrants, enabling them to allocate resources, time, and effort effectively in managing stakeholder relationships and communication planning.

In summary, the Power/Interest Grid is a visual tool used to categorize stakeholders based on their level of power and interest. It helps organizations prioritize stakeholders, develop appropriate engagement strategies, and plan communication efforts to effectively manage stakeholder relationships in a project or organization.
