BA Techniques: 5 S

Purpose:

It is a systematic form of visual management utilizing everything from basic functions to operation manuals. 5S is a framework that emphasizes the use of specific mindset and tools to create efficiency and value.

The 5S methodology traces its lineage to the post war of japan, where the leaders of burgeoning Toyota industries were seeking to reduce the manufacturing waste and inefficiencies. Toyota production system encompass the 5S methodology in 1980 to produce the product quickly and at a high quality level. The 5S is a systematic approach to the workplace organization. The steps in 5S involve the items in the workspace, removing whats unnecessary, organizing items, cleaning, performing maintenance, and making sure these thing become habits. This methodology was developed as a way to make just-in-time manufacturing was possible. This type of manufacturing intends to produce only the amount of product that is needed.

The 5S methodology is a system for handling the workplace organization. It turn the organization in to step-by-step process for people to follow. This methodology is often considered the foundation of lean manufacturing because for a workplace to reduce the unnecessary information and become more efficient. 5S stands for,

  • Sort (Seiri) - This action involves going through all the contents of a workspace to determine which are needed and which can be removed.
  • Set in Order (Seiton) - It will ensure that all the items are organized and each item has a designated place. Organizing the item will make the task easier to complete.
  • Shine (Seiso) - This means maintaining the newly organized workspace.
  • Standardize (Seiketsu) - Create a standard for both the organization and the business processes.
  • Sustain (Shitsuke) - Sustain the new practices and conduct audits to maintain the business process.
