Top Ten Facts on Business Analysis Techniques – Decision Table Structure

Overview: Decision Table is a structured decision-making technique that uses a tabular format to represent decision logic or business rules.

Heading: The heading of a Decision Table typically includes the conditions or inputs that affect the decision and the possible values or states they can take.

Conditions: Conditions in a Decision Table represent the variables, factors, or parameters that are relevant to the decision being made. They are usually listed in the columns of the table and can have multiple states or values.

Rules: Rules in a Decision Table are the combinations of conditions and their corresponding outcomes or actions. They are usually represented in the rows of the table.

Outcomes/Actions: Outcomes or actions in a Decision Table represent the results, decisions, or actions that are taken based on the conditions. They are typically listed in the cells of the table, corresponding to the combination of conditions in a rule.

Decision Logic: Decision Tables use decision logic to determine the outcomes or actions based on the conditions. The decision logic can be represented using different types of rules, such as "if-then" rules or "if-else" rules.

Rule Ordering: Decision Tables can have rules ordered in a specific sequence, which determines the priority or precedence of rules in case of conflicting conditions.

Rule Combinations: Decision Tables can represent all possible combinations of conditions and their corresponding outcomes, making it easy to analyze and understand the decision-making process.

Simplification: Decision Tables can simplify complex decision logic by breaking it down into manageable, structured tables with clear conditions, rules, and outcomes.

Decision Analysis: Decision Tables are widely used for decision analysis and decision support in various fields, such as business, finance, healthcare, and engineering, as they provide a visual and systematic way to represent and analyze decision-making logic.

In summary, Decision Table is a structured decision-making technique that uses a tabular format to represent decision logic or business rules. It includes headings, conditions, rules, outcomes/actions, decision logic, rule ordering, rule combinations, simplification, and is widely used for decision analysis.
