Located in the eastern part of Canada, Halifax – also called the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is the capital of the Nova Scotia province. The regional municipality comprises 4 former municipalities that were amalgamated in 1996 – Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Halifax County. This city has a humid continental climate which is characterized by warm summers and relatively mild winters. A public research university in the Nova Scotia province, the Dalhousie University was established in 1818 as a nonsectarian college by the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie. The name was formally brought to the current one by the provincial legislation of 1997 which merged the institution with the Technical University of Nova Scotia. It has three campuses in Halifax, one in Bible and medical teaching facilities in New Brunswick. It is a member of the group of research-intensive universities in Canada named U15.
