Position Overview
A strategic purchasing manager is needed for locating and maintaining the best sources of supply for the components, materials and services an organisation need. While purchasing managers have so far focused on finding the lowest-cost suppliers, strategic purchasing managers consider all aspects of their relationship with suppliers, including quality, value and the ability to respond quickly to changing supply requirements. They select suppliers to act as long-term partners and assist the company meet its growth objectives.

Academic Qualification

Bachelor’s degree in logistics or supply chain management

Professional Experience

Minimum five years purchasing/strategic sourcing experience
Minimum 3-year relevant operations or supply chain experience
Experience with contract manufacturing vendors
Strong preference for some international sourcing experience
Strongly prefer some plastic part/component sourcing experience

Roles and Responsibilities

Strategic purchasing managers are responsible for purchasing the best supplies or services at the best value.
Achieve cost reductions as well as maintaining or improving the quality of supplies and services.
Evaluate suppliers’ quality standards and encourage suppliers to collaborate their standards with the purchasing company and also work with quality managers in both organizations to establish continuous improvement programs.
Access to technology or components which help an organisation create new products or improve existing products provided by suppliers to add value to the company.
Choose the suppliers who are most important to the development of the company and negotiate the contracts that set out prices, standards of quality, cost-effective targets, delivery span, and terms and conditions.
Monitor the performance of suppliers against contractual standards and work with them to achieve continuous improvements in costs and performance and also are responsible for traditional purchasing functions.
Handle the purchasing requests from various other departments, issue purchase orders for non-strategic supplies and check-up the orders to make sure that suppliers are delivered on time.
Develop reports on purchasing and compare expenditures against purchasing budgets for various departments or various types of supply.

Competencies

Good analytical abilities to assess the performance of suppliers such as cost, quality, ability, reliability to innovate and financial stability.
Financial skills to assess the total cost of dealing with a supplier, including price and factors like the costs of delivery, quality control, administration and inventory.
Good interpersonal skills
Negotiating skills to form effective long-term relationships with supply partners.

Salary ranges depending on the experience. Typically, the average salary for a Strategic Procurement Manager in India is around Rs.13 lakhs to Rs.15 lakhs annually.
