The Plastic laminates and sheets is made of resins which are made to react with aldehydes during the thermosetting process. The manufacturing process consists of  the 4 following stages:-

  • Impregnating thePaper
  • Drying
  • Curing
  • Thermosetting
  • Finishing

The first process starts with the immersion of paper strips in the resin. Once they are soaked, they are put in a drying chamber. Depending on the thickness and purpose,  the number of layers used may vary. Kraft paper is the bottom layer. It comes in widths of 3 to 5 feet. It is run through a vat consisting of phenolic resins or a bath tub. The top layer is translucent in nature. The layer below the top layer is the decorative sheet consisting of patterns and designs. Melamine vat is used to run through the decorative sheet. Once they are dried, they are cut and stacked.

Then the layers of paper are placed on a hydraulic press for curing process. High pressure accompanied by heating is done by the press. This high temperature caused by the heating causes the resins to react. The molecules attach to each other in a alternating chain manner. This causes release of water molecules. Thermosetting converts the strips and sheets into a strong singular laminated sheet. The sheet formed cannot be further shaped even with the influence of high temperature conditions. As a final process it is cut into final shapes. Depending on the need, they may even be attached to certain materials like plywood, etc.
