This Manufacturing Industry has been of traditional importance and has existed since the time Industrial Revolutions took place. Most modern structures incorporate steel fixtures or Ferroalloys in one form or the other. Even though there have been many breakthrough developments in this field , the modern methods are still based on the Bessemer Process.

Today steel production is possible either via modern recycled methods or via traditional extraction processes from the ore. All steel production can be accounted either into Basic Oxygen Steel (BOS)making or Electric Arc Furnace (EAC)method.

The first step in making of steel is Iron Making. Iron ore, coke and lime are melted in a blast furnace. The resultant iron popularly known as hot metal is brittle in nature and contains 4-4.5% carbon & other impurities.

The BOS Method adds scrapped steel to the molten iron in a converter. Once high temperature is reached oxygen is blown through the metal. This reduces the carbon content and in turn reduces the brittle nature.

In the EAF Method, the scrapped steel is fed through an high voltage electric arc. It melts the metal and turns it into high quality steel.

To adjust the steel composition of the resultant molten steel obtained from BOS and EAF methods, secondary processes take place. This done by adjusting temperatures, providing a different atmosphere for treatment, adding or removing constituents, etc.

Depending on the required composition the following methods are employed for secondary treatment:-

  • Degassing
  • CAS-OB (composition adjustment by sealed argon bubbling with oxygen blowing)
Molten Steel is cast into a cooled mold, causing a thin steel shell to solidify. The shell strand is taken out with the help of guiding rolls. Then depending upon the application the steel is cut and shaped accordingly. Hot rolling is the often followed process as there are fewer casting defects.
