The production of the inner spring unit is usually sub contracted by mattresses manufacturers. Depending upon the feel and comfort required for the product the insulator and cushioning layers are applied. Giant quilting machines are used to simultaneously manufacture the decorative outer cover of the mattress. The giant quilting machines are used to control the multitude of needle movement for the outer cover. Apart from providing the aesthetic features, the outer coverings also prevent  the mattress from slipping and creep over the layers of cushioning. Once quilted, into is cut into dimensions that will accommodate the top and bottom of the mattress. Similarly the side panels are also cut. The side panels may also be separately made on Border machines. The side vents and panels are added to the side panels. Flanges are attached to the top and bottom panels by devices like specially modified sewing machines. Hog rings are also stapled to the side panels. Hog rings are attached to the inner spring unit and secured by a closing operation. Closing process is one of the most important steps in the mattress manufacturing process. Movable sewing heads mounted on tracks are utilized for this operation. The top, side and bottom panels along with a heavy duty bounding tape are are manually fed by Tap edge operators. Skilled operators or labour make sure each component is fed in the right quantity into the machines. They make sure their tailored made output is attainable. A panel with soft upholstery and pillows may also be attached. This is usually done for the luxurious and higher end mattresses. A wire grid is placed, aligned and manually locked over the coil design. A thin layer of Upholstery is also applied to the top. Then the frame is inserted to a cover that is pre-sewn to the required dimensions. Then the Border fabric is also attached.
