Insurance involves a group of members pooling in to share risks. This is a concept  that has been from the very beginning. Merchants and Sailors developed the concept to save themselves from the financial ruins they has to face.

Insurance Firms pool in money to pay claims. They pay for expenses involved in selling and providing insurance protection. Even when Insurance Firms face losses exceeding the amount collected via premiums, they use the money set aside for reserves to continue insurance operations. There is no easy way to fix the rate of the premium. The premiums intended to be collected must be set well before hand. Hence based on the forecast of what the situation might be or what the actual cost may occur as, the predictions are made and the premium is fixed. There are many factors that determine the premium. Frequency of claim and the severity of each claim are the two key players determining the premium rates. There is always the danger of Insurance frauds occurring. They usually appear more in times of recession and the aftermaths  of major catastrophes. Misrepresentation of facts, padding, submitting claims for events that never occurred and billing for medical services that never rendered are all common frauds that take place. All Insurance Companies have to comply to certain underwriting companies. Underwriting operations include claims and operations involved for the state, dividends to stake holders, licensing fee and state taxes. Underwriting Operations however do not provide any profit to the organization. Insurance firms and agents are usually regulated by government norms.  Invested funds in capital, surplus accounts and reserve money allow insurance companies to operate even when the underwriting costs are high.
