Steps to Paintless Dent Repair (PDR):
1.Assess the damage:
The first step is to evaluate the damage and to determine the magnitude of it. Almost 80-90% of dents can be removed through PDR.
2.Gain entry to the dent:
After evaluate the dent, the back side of the dent is to be accessed. A pathway is obtained by carefully removing the body panels, tail light or interior panels to perform the PDR repair.
3.Get a better look at the dent:
Special light boards are being used by the technicians to cast a shadow of the dent which can be used by the technicians to decide on where to place the tools at the back end of the dent to relieve the body back to its original position.
4.Apply slow pressure to work out the dent:
Special tools are then used to massage the exterior body back to its original position.
Steps to dent repair:
1.Remove the dent:The body panel is evaluated and access is gained to the reverse of the body by removing the door panels and interior trims. Then the dent is removed by using a hammer and dolly to tap out the dent close to the panel line. For more serious dents, dent puller may be used.
2.Surface preparation:
Before filling the dent the area needed to be cleaned with abrasive pads or grit speed file paper to remove the paint as body fillers do not stick to paint. It is further cleaned with prepwash wax and grease remover.
3.Apply filler:
The next process is mix the required amount of body filler with hardener until a uniform mixture is obtained. The body filler is applied with an applicator to cover the dented area. A curing time of 20-30 minutes is then allowed.
4.Shape and Sand:
It is then carefully rubbed with sand paper until the filler is level with the surrounding panel.
5.Finishing:
The surface is then cleaned with wax and grease remover before painting which is done by the following steps:
- The surrounding areas are masked with masking tape to avoid overspray.
- The surface primer is applied to fill any sanding marks remaining in repair.
- A coat of etch primer is sprayed and sand back using wet and dry sand paper to remove scratches.
- The surface is then again cleaned with prepwash.
- 2-3 coats of Acrylic Basecoat Colour is then applied to the repaired area by allowing an interval of 10 minutes between each coat.
- After the basecoat has dried, a Clear Top Coat is applied.
Body panel repair:
The body panel repair process is explained below,
- Remove the old or damaged auto body panel. Several Phillips screw are used to remove the plastic protective skirting under the vehicle.
- Look behind the panel and locate the bolts that are holding it to the car. The nuts and bolts are removed and saved so that they can be used while installing new panels.
- Pull the old panel off of the car and notice where the tabs and bolt holes were located and compare their positions with new panels thereby making sure that the new panels fit properly.
- The new panels are then placed in correct positions and then the bolts are inserted through the tabs and the nuts are tightened on to the bolts with a ratchet and a socket.

2. Unibody frame
Unibody frames have better structural integrity than Body on frames. Nowadays most of the automobile manufacturers prefer unibody frames to body on frames but sill several SUVs and trucks are being made with body on frames which has less safety, high body roll which are also expensive to be manufactured. The main advantage of body on frame is that it is easy to repair.
An autoframe repair machine has a large platform with a couple of rotatable towers. The damaged parts are attached to the towers using chains and clamps are used to bolt the vehicle to the platform. The chains are used to pull and push the frame to give its original shape. Determining the areas to be fixed the mechanics attach the chains to specific positions. In some cases laser diagnostics are used for obtaining proper realignment of frames wherein the towers are rotated and the chains are attached to the other areas of the frame that need to be straightened. The process is repeated until the entire frame has returned to the factory specification.
Precise alignment of the frame is important for successful repair since improper alignment can cause issues such as faster tire wear, uneven steering, and poor safety. Modern technology and expert attention is another requisite fir accurate straightening.

Determine the paint to be used (Example: water borne , solvent borne). Normally the three coats applied are: Primer,Topcoat and clear coat
- Match the paint to rest of the car. In case of partial repainting the colour matching can be done by identifying the colour code.
- Tapes can be used for masking the surfaces which are not painted.
- Followed by sanding down, the vehicle is wiped with thinner in order to remove dust. Dryness must be ensured prior to painting.
- Two to three coats of primers are usually required to cover entire surface. The earlier coat must be dried prior to application of the next coat.
- The vehicle needs to be re sanded so as to eliminate of the powdery effect which is followed by another sanding down.
- Top coat paint along with ratios of paint thinners are applied in sequence of 3 to 4 coats similar to primer.
