The Industry consists of a system where collection of investments in the form of stocks, bonds and other funds is done from a group of investors. It is managed by a professional money managing body. The security of the investment depends on the nature and objective of the particular fund. As more and more people invest, the shares and units for the fund increase. Portfolio Managers manage these funds on a day to day basis. According to the investment objectives of the fund, they take decisions and also assist people in making such decisions. It is important to analyse the risk and returns before choosing to invest. Doing a study on the past performance will help making decisions. Funds are usually purchased at a net asset value. Sales charges may be applicable in certain cases. All funds usually collect a fee.  The amount collected as fee must also be accounted for as they reduce the investment return. Net Asset Value (NAV) plays a role at the time of purchase, switch or redemption. The NAV is usually updated on a daily basis. This value is updated in newspapers or in some cases even the company’s own private websites.

There are two main ways in which people make money out of funds. One is via Capital gains and the other one is via Distributions. Capital gains are acquired when funds are sold at good profit rates. Depending on the cases, there may be amounts divided to receive distributions of dividends, interest, capital gains or other incomes. This type of earning comes under distributions.

Funds as part of registered plans won’t require separate tax fillings. The funds are usually bought from banks, trust companies, insurance companies, credit unions, caisses populaires, investment firms, and mutual fund dealers.
